Objective
Road traffic injuries are a major public health problem in Mexico. This paper presents the model for road safety training for trainers, replicators and target population, in association with four risk factors: no use of seat belts, no use of child restraint system, not using helmets for motorcyclists and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Material and methods.
The road safety training model is a component among five others, which take part in the IMESEVI. This program aims to train people with predetermined profiles, such as specialized knowledge about risk factors and major road safety topics for the systematic replication of road safety knowledge among the general population. The program is based on a theoretical-practical training, with technical and pedagogical issues, for a total of 64 hours. It has educational materials designed especially for this initiative: basic guidelines manual, flip chart, CDs with presentations and videos, as well as a system for managing information and assessment.
Results.
In 2009, during a period of approximately seven month, 93 trainers, 848 multipliers, 128 replicators and 40,363 civilians have been trained under the RSNP in four municipalities.
Discussion and Conclusion.
According to the design of this training model, it is considered feasible to train more than 30 thousand people a year among the target population. The training model is complementary to other interventions for dissemination and creates awareness on road safety issues, as well as social participation activities, communication campaigns, cross industrial relations, among others.
