Traffic accidents and their consequences are serious brazilian problems. To answer this, the Health's Ministry has been implementing a prevention program of these events linked to traffic departments. This government action was evaluated focusing on five of the 16 initiatives existing in distinctive country's regions: Palmas, Fortaleza, Campo Grande, Rio de Janeiro and Florianpolis. They tried to build and validate evaluation indicators, based on parameters and guidelines of health policies and traffic laws, subjecting them to experts through the Delphi technique. They obtained 39 indicators of the establishment and implementation of these experiences. There were interviews and focal groups with managers and implementers of the Projects. The evaluation showed that these Projects are focusing more their actions on promoting of behavior and of safe and healthy environments and on the monitoring and surveillance of traffic accidents. However, its performance is still very shy and less comprehensive in opposition to the problem magnitude. It was verified that the Projects need to integrate and diversify the actions addressing them also to the several levels of assistance and training of professionals. The Projects in Palmas, Fortaleza and Campo Grande were better assessed by contribution in the organization of pre-hospital care and assistance to the victims of such accidents. Fortaleza excels in staff training and research support. The Project of Rio de Janeiro proved to be far inferior in relation to the others. The evaluation of prevention experiences and indicators use is still a not widespread brazilian practice.
