Marginalized parents live on the edges of society.  When the interplay of stressors, the lack of resources and coping strategies overwhelm them, these parents are at risk for child maltreatment.  If it occurs, interventions meant to ameliorate problems often serve to exacerbate the array of stressors already faced by the family. The challenge is to provide the kinds of resources with which to derail the trajectory that places these families under care.   
The Childrens Cottage Society, in Calgary, operates under the premise that social support serves a critical role in the prevention of child abuse and neglect.  In practice, it offers crisis care, respite care and various supportive resources to parents with young children. Individually and collectively, social support resources promote positive parent-child relationships; increase parenting knowledge and skills; foster healthy child development, and strengthen community connections for families.
The study sampled different cohorts of parents who accessed various programs.  The design employed a one-group, pre-and post-test design.  Four instruments quantitatively and qualitatively measured parental responses along four factors corresponding to stress, positive affect, hopefulness and coping responses.
Results indicated that social support enhanced all four factors across all programs. That is, analysis determined that parents displayed a reduction in stress, an increase in positive emotionality, the use of different and appropriate coping strategies and increased levels of hopefulness.  In conclusion, the research showed that marginalized parents have the capacity upon receiving social support to reduce the risks associated with child maltreatment.
