Each year many fire incidents occur in residential area, even much more than fires in industrial complexes and results in life and property loss.
This survey was carried out for investigation of existing fire safety measures in 400 residences in Tehran city. A questionnaire comprising main topics on cooking safety, home heating safety, electrical safety and escape routes, etc was developed and data collected.
Safety compliance in above mentioned items was found 60%, 65%, 66%and 10% respectively and total average safety index was 50%. Based on this survey it is evident that status of home fire safety in the studied apartments is not satisfactory.
The main problem in these apartments were about lack of fire escape plan,  smoke alarm, fire extinguisher, awareness of emergency preparedness of family members and practical home fire drills. 
So it is imperative to take proper steps particularly during the home design step, training and fire escape route to prevent fire and improve safety of homes. Some of steps required to be considered urgently are also discussed in this paper.
