Determining trends on childhood injuries using a Western Australia Data Linkage System: a proposal Introduction: Injury prevention has been identified as a priority area in Australia. However, previous Australian childhood injury studies have only focused on all age groups and used less than 10 years of follow-up data to measure trends. Objectives: i) To describe the distribution of injuries in children aged 0-14 years from 1989 to 2007, according to risk factors namely age, sex, socio-economic status, co-morbidity and geographical remoteness. ii) To describe the trends leading to hospitalisation, death or emergency departments attendance and associations with each risk factor. iii) To determine the effect of community-based injury interventions on the mortality and morbidity for each risk factor. Methodology: It is a longitudinal, retrospective observational study, utilizing validated whole-population linked health data from the WADLS, involving injury data of all WA residents aged 0 to 14 years from 1989 to 2007. The distribution and trends of injury will be described as total, cause-specific injury deaths and age-specific rates as well as age-standardised rates. Incidence rate ratios (and 95% CIs) will be calculated and assessed through Poisson and/or negative binomial regression model. Effectiveness of community-based interventions on children injuries will be assessed through a segmented regression analysis. Conclusions: This study will provide the evidence to focus injury prevention initiatives that are tailored to different determinants of children injuries, hopefully, could be translated into adoption of evidence-based injury control efforts.
