Purpose
The Internet is increasingly used as a tool for disseminating health, safety, and injury prevention information. This pilot study utilized a novel focus group structure to explore farm parents' use of the Internet to search for safety and health information, particularly relating to preventing injuries to children on farms.
Methods
This novel combined-methods focus group pilot project was conducted in central Wisconsin. Farm parents with children under age 18 were purposively recruited if they had used the Internet recently. Three focus groups were held; each began with a short demographic survey, after which a group discussion about Internet searching preferences took place. Finally, each group directed a moderator who used a computer to make a number of actual Internet searches. The focus groups were video and audio recorded, and audio tapes were transcribed for analysis.
Results
Clear themes emerged around 1) searching for safety and health information, 2) evaluating the usefulness and trustworthiness of Internet sites, and 3) choosing to act on information found.
Conclusions
This novel combined-method focus group elicited important information from farm parents regarding their Internet use. They had definite preferences about accessing web sites and judging their usefulness and credibility. It will be important to take into account the specific preferences of target farm parent audiences when using the Internet to disseminate injury prevention information.
