Healthcare providers are exposed daily to blood borne injury and infection with a high risk of hepatitis B or C and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission. This study was conducted to assess the opinion and practice of hand wash during routine patient care among nurses in a university hospital in UAE. This was a questionnaire based survey and a total of 101 nurses participated in the survey. A pre tested questionnaire was used to collect data from nurses. Consent was obtained from the participants before the start of the survey. The response rate was 100%. The mean age of the respondent was 29.595.96 years. Mean duration of clinical experience was 79.3650.29 months. All nurses knew that hand washing is an important prophylactic disinfection to be practiced by all healthcare professionals to prevent getting infection. All nurses opined that hand should be washed in between patient contacts. A high proportion of the nurses 85 (84.2%) always washed their hands between patient contact. Among them 98.8% use both water and disinfectant while washing their hands. Among those who practiced hand washing occasionally 75% did not respond to the reasons for occasional hand washing but 19% revealed that, they are overloaded with clinical work. All participants were with the opinion that it is important to always wash hands after coming in contact with blood and body fluid. In the present study, only 96.03% had heard about standard precautions but all nurses practice hand washing either always or occasionally.
