Introduction There are several information systems for recording injuries and illnesses. International Classification of Diseases (ICD) is the main international code for morbidity and mortality of disease. Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) is used in trauma and research vehicle accidents and is coded based on severity. At present, there are several systems available to convert ICD to AIS: ICD-9-CM into AIS-80, ICD-9-CM into AIS 85, ICD-9-CM into AIS 90, and ICD-10-CM into AIS-90-update98. Objective Analyze methodology and results of the study on compatibility between ICD and AIS; determine the strengths and weaknesses in order to establish a reliable conversion system. Methods Review conversion systems from ICD to AIS. The results show that there is no common methodology used when developing, recording, and disseminating the algorithms. Discussion Changes can be made to the ICD coding system that can improve conversions to AIS. First, it is necessary that multiple injuries be coded separately. Thus, fracture descriptions must specify whether they are open, displaced, unilateral or if they involve a joint. Injuries to the vertebra must specify if secondary damages have occurred to surrounding vasculature or the spinal chord. Descriptions of exterior lacerations should specify location, depth, and loss of blood. Injuries involving sprains, muscle tears, and dislocations must specify if they involve tendons or muscles. Internal organ injuries must specify if they are a perforation. In addition, AIS coding should include references to frostbite injuries, burns, and foreign objects in the body.
