Introduction: Injuries among the elderly are increasing as the elderly population grows. In addition to fall, traffic injury among the elderly is becoming an emerging public health issue. Understanding different exposure patterns in daily life activity and their co-morbidity is crucial and enables the possibility to develop appropriate and effective safety promotion aiming for safer travel and better health for elderly.
Method: A cross-sectional, study using questionnaires and biomechanical methods were used. Seven elderly female people who had extremity complication were recruited (age 82+/-4, Barthel index 91.4+/-3.8). All had experience major fall injuries, and 2 out of 7 had experienced major traffic injuries in the last five years. Newly developed portable metabolic system and portable acceleration monitoring device were used to assess daily activity of the elderly. The association of the daily activity and risk of fall/traffic injury was also investigated.
Result: By using the technical devices, good data regarding elderly exposure to injury were obtained. There was no significant association found between daily life activity and risk of fall/traffic injuries.
Discussion: The sample size was small but enough as a pilot study for giving the answer that the technical device worked well when measuring daily activity of the elderly. The same device could be used for future studies with larger sample size. The study did not have any control group but interesting results were obtained.
