Abstract Content *
Pedestrians on Delhi roads are often exposed to a large risk. However, basic needs of pedestrians are not recognized as part of urban transport infrastructure. Rather, increasing numbers of cars two wheelers, and construction of large number of flyovers to facilitate signal-free movement for them are putting pedestrians at a larger risk. In Delhi, significant investment has been made for the construction of flyovers to increase the speed of motorized vehicles, to reduce their delay and to make Delhi a signal-free zone with this problem of pedestrian crossing arises. This paper describes the analysis of pedestrian behaviour at a signalized intersection before and after the construction of flyover. It also quantifies the risk taking behaviour of pedestrians while crossing roads by developing Logistic model. In this we assumed that the probability of crossing road is not only depends on the gap size (in seconds), but also different demographic parameters , waiting time, speed of oncoming vehicles, intersection geometry, signal cycle time etc. The model was fitted on the data collected at the AIIMS intersection in Delhi before and after the construction of flyover. We set up multiple linear regression model on Accepted Gap which depends on the parameters like age, gender, waiting times of pedestrians at origin, type of pedestrians, type of vehicle faced by pedestrian and speed of vehicle. The analysis shows that the risk to pedestrian has increased after the construction of flyover and also pedestrian are willing to take increased risk after the construction of flyover.
