Abstract Content *
Purpose: estimate prevalence of different forms of domestic violence (DV)against women in the reproductive age, determine characteristics of vulnerable women and of perpetrators, identify determinants of DV, reveal some physical and psychological consequences of DV, explore beliefs and attitudes of women towards DV, and examine the effects of a supportive group therapy to a subgroup of abused women.
Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional household survey of 720 women, aged 15-49 years residing in Alexandria. The standard cluster sampling was used. Quantitative data ccollection(interview questionnaire)and qualitative data collection (focus group discussion for in depth information on knowledge, attitudes and beliefs) were used. An intervention supportive group therapy for some assaulted women was conducted at the end of the fieldwork.
Results: Prevalence of domestic violence was 30.7%, abused women were more likely to be younge, illiterate, unemployed, with short marriage duration, rural dweller, low socioeconomic class, have low self-esteem and witnessed parental violence when young. The abusing husband/father was more likely to be illiterate, unemployed, heavy smoker, or alcohol and/or drug abuser, and witnessed parental violence when young. Concerning knowledge, attitudes and beliefs, abused women were less knowledgeable and had more accepting attitudes towards domestic violence. Abused women made benefits from the supportive group therapy as proved by the evaluation of the psychological battery (pretest-posttest approach).
Conclusion: domestic violence against women is among the most challenging health problems . Its aetiology is multifactorial. However, many of these risk factors could be potentially controlled.
