SOCIAL CAPITAL AND INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE PREVENTION.

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is now considered a public health problem globally, responsible for 4.8million women and 2.9million men experiencing related physical assaults and rapes (Tjaden P, Thoennes N, 2000) annually. The extent and health consequences of IPV have prompted increased research to understand its risk and eliciting factors. Social capital is a risk factor that should receive a more in-depth attention.

Social capital refers to the stock of active connections among people that bind the members of human networks and communities and make cooperative action possible (Cohen, Don and Lawrence Prusak, 2001). Studies on IPV have suggested women will prefer to report cases of abuse to such networks which include close family, friends and community leaders (Counts DA, Brown J, Campbell J, 1992), especially in the African context. This suggests that IPV prevention may benefit from utilizing social capital for mitigation.

In Northern Uganda where there has been prolonged LRA insurgency for over 20 years, the local Elders proposed traditional guiding principles based on respect, sincerity, reconciliation and harmony, forgiveness, dialogue ( Liu Institute of global Issues and Gulu District NGO forum, 2005) as a peaceful means of conflict resolution and healing the wounds caused by war. These beliefs are hinged on community networks targeted at rebuilding mutual trust, respect and reciprocity (pillars of social capital).

It could therefore be hypothesized that a weak social capital is a risk factor for IPV.
