The safety 2010 conference will serve as state of art multi disciplinary platform for prevention of injury and the promotion of safety; merging a variety of stakeholders and younger talent to cover some of the longstanding gaps in the field. As a development professional and research scholar, I am involved in sustainable transport planning and related land use aspects. The work involves planning and developing sustainable transport models for medium and large cities. The focus has been on road based Public transport and bicycle, rickshaws and hawkers/vendors. Most of the work deals with planning safe infrastructure for non-motorized transport. As perceived from the conference details the themes will be informative and inspiring for me. Interaction with experts from various fields and people from all sectors will be beneficial for me in future as a Physical and Transport Planner. The opportunity today will not only let me be part of bigger network, but also let me plan and implement the safe and sustainable transport and land use development. Despite adequate funds and other resources the vision zero is far from reality in our fast growing Indian urban areas. The typical medium density, mixed land use, spatial distribution of informal sector makes Indian cities unique. Owing to the experience, adequate exposure (safety 2010 conference), field knowledge and strong research background; it is apparent that I shall be able to give concrete inputs related to sustainable land use and safe transport, especially for informal sector and urban poor in my region.
