Ive been working as a researcher for child-safety promotion and injury prevention in Thailand. I was trained TEACH-VIP by WHO-SEARO last year. Im responsible for the Child Death Deliberation Project (CDD) which collects data on the external causes of child-death. This is done through in-depth interviews conducted in 4 areas; family history, incident evidence, medical reports and police investigation reports. Weve been working with multidisciplinary teams, include prosecutors, pediatricians, medical jurisprudence and child protection workers. Even though the CDD Project has been running since 2007, child safety promotion and injury prevention is still poor. The main factor is that most Thai people are not as safety minded as Europeans. Most people are poor and focus only on making a living. They dont look after their children well. Meanwhile, the local administration doesnt have enough social services to provide for them, particularly in low-income localities. Although weve had the Child Protection Act since 2003, the law enforcement related to child protection has been ineffective. Therefore, we should try to apply the safety promotion procedures used in developed countries and bring about safety promotion applicable and appropriate for Thai culture. Not only will this improve the child safety promotion and injury prevention process, but it will also decrease the social inequity in Thailand. Children should be provided with a basic quality of life and equal rights by the government to protect their development and well-being as they grow up.
